Lean Home Runs

When embarking on an improvement initiative it is important to create a succession plan right from the start.  Beginning your improvement initiative with kaizen events is a good way to get results quickly, but eventually those kaizen events will yield diminishing returns.  To ensure you continue to hit “Lean Home Runs” it is important to plan for subsequent phases which will probably require additional resources, including staff, training and education, and financial investment.  3P is one such project based approach to improvement that takes a good amount of up front planning and resources, but will provide a new basis for kaizen to resume from.  Start the groundwork for these efforts early to ensure you have the support needed to seamlessly transition from a kaizen centric improvement effort to a project based effort.  This upfront planning will keep your effort from stalling in transition and ensure your improvement effort will continue to ‘hit it out of the ballpark’!
