Walk before Run

When implementing lean, leaders and consultants will often start with the simplest of tasks such as Sort and Set-in-order from 5S. Although these simple lean tools yield some immediate gains, the real reason for starting simple is to instill and test organizational discipline.  How can a facility be expected to understand and practice the concepts of Takt Time, Kanban, and Heijunka if they do not possess the discipline to simply place a broom back on a shadow board?
