Changing Roles

Rick Ankiel was a pitcher with the St Louis Cardinals from 1999 until 2001, during that time he lost his ability to consistently throw strikes and was in jeopardy of losing his major league career. In early 2005 after trying to regain his pitching form in the minor leagues, Ankiel left his position as a pitcher and moved to the outfield. For two and a half years following that decision he honed his skills as a hitter and fielder in the Cardinals’ minor-league system. On August 9, 2007 he was called up to the Cardinals and made his second major-league “debut”—this time as an outfielder. Ankiel hit 47 home runs as an outfielder and two as a pitcher and is still playing with the Washington Nationals to this day.

In organizations we sometimes find that there are those on our teams struggling to find a place or to execute within their position. It is important that we step back and assess whether this is the best position for this person. Changing the role of someone who is having a hard time can strengthen the team as well as the individual.
